Where Hawai'i Goes for New Ideas

The Summit is our annual event that addresses Hawai'i's strategic futures. For two days decision-makers and leading thinkers learn about cutting edge ideas and work together to map the changes that Hawai'i can and should undergo to become a global exemplar.

Personal Experiences

"The Summit gives me the chance to work with my colleagues on some of the major issues facing Hawai‘i in a way that allows different perspectives to collaborate on generating a new context for the issues and initiating a new dialogue about the future of Hawai‘i.”
Allen Uyeda, President & CEO, First Insurance Company of Hawai‘i

"During the daily grind, I usually only get the time and space to think big in isolated moments—like while I’m doing the weekly ironing or riding the bus over the Pali.  Rarely do I have the chance to sit with peers in a setting where chewing on big, important aspects of Hawaii’s future is the agenda of the day.  The Hawai‘i Futures Summit is an important event, and my only regret is that it doesn’t happen more frequently.  Our task as participants is to replicate the setting of the Summit and inject the type of thinking done there into our daily work life.”
Josh Levinson, President & CEO, Community Links Hawai‘i

"We look forward to the Summit each year because the provocative new ideas we learn and the new connections we make allow us to return to work excited about a new set of possibilities for Waipā.”
Stacy Sproat-Beck, Executive Director, Waipā Foundation

Summit Success! Mahalo to everyone on the 2008 Summit

Participants at the Summit this year explored emerging technologies and developments in fields such as energy, urban transportation, and the local fabrication of goods. Participants were exposed to a variety of new opportunities and drew upon those ideas to work through several different scenarios of Hawai‘i’s future, focusing on the issues of energy and transportation in the years ahead. Combining potential developments and unpredictable future events, participants constructed very challenging situations that shaped how we will be able to produce energy and to move people, learning more about the complexity and uncertainty within many of these major local issues.

Drawing on the new ideas explored on Day 1, participants moved on to mapping strategies for change in Hawai‘i, initiating some provocative and productive discussions on future goals and strategies for Hawai‘i’s energy and food security. We were also able to look at how communities and local leadership could be better shaped by emerging technologies and new ideas. In particular, we made an important contribution to the evolving energy conversation by facilitating local energy decision-makers in beginning to explore the links between short-term tactics and the longer-term strategies for energy independence in Hawai‘i.

Mahalo once again to our sponsors: First Insurance, Enterprise Honolulu, Hokuli'a, and Native Sun Business Group
